How to Measure a Cat or Dog Collar

How to measure a cat or dog collar — educational neck size guide with two-finger fit check

A well-fitting collar is one of the simplest comfort upgrades you can give your cat or dog. Too loose and an ID buckle or AirTag holder can slip; too tight and everyday wear feels restless. This guide walks you through measuring at home, reading size charts, and choosing with confidence—whether you are shopping cat collars or dog collars.

What you need

Soft measuring tape works best. If you only have a string or ribbon, wrap it around the neck, mark the meeting point, then measure the string against a ruler. Keep a treat nearby so measuring feels like a pause, not a struggle.

How to measure neck circumference

  1. Have your pet stand or sit in a natural posture.
  2. Place the tape around the neck where a collar normally sits—usually just below the ears and above the shoulders.
  3. Keep the tape snug but not tight. You should be able to slide two fingers between the tape and the neck.
  4. Write down the number in inches (our charts use inches). Measure twice if your pet wriggles.

For fluffy coats, measure against the skin rather than over a thick top layer of fur. For short coats, a light touch against the coat is fine.

The two-finger fit check

After the collar is on, use the same two-finger test. Two fingers should slip under the collar comfortably. If you cannot fit one finger, size up or loosen the adjustment. If three or four fingers fit easily, size down or tighten—especially for cats who climb and play.

Reading Pawture size charts

Every Pawture product page lists its own size range, because widths, buckles, and holders differ by design. Always match your measurement to the chart on the product you are buying—not a generic chart from another brand.

You will also find a store-wide overview on our Size Guide page. Use it for orientation, then confirm against the product chart before checkout.

  • Cats & kittens: Many styles offer S and L neck ranges. Growing kittens often start in S; re-measure as they grow. Browse kitten-friendly breakaway styles if you need a safety release.
  • Dogs: Ranges typically run XS through XL. Measure the neck only for collars; if you add a harness later, measure the chest (girth) separately for that product.

Between sizes? Choose thoughtfully

If your pet sits right on a size boundary:

  • Prefer the larger size when the collar has plenty of adjustment holes or a long strap.
  • Prefer the smaller size only if the larger size hangs loosely after full tightening.
  • For growing puppies or kittens, choose a size with room to adjust—and re-check fit every few weeks.

Personalized engraving and sizing

Many Pawture collars include laser engraving on a metal buckle or holder. Engraving is permanent for that piece, so confirm size first. Character limits vary by product—often two lines on buckle styles, or up to three lines on certain AirTag holders—so read the product page carefully. Leave a little buffer in the neck measurement; you cannot resize engraving after it ships.

Quick measuring tips that prevent returns

  • Measure in the morning and evening if your dog’s neck fluctuates after long walks or meals.
  • Do not measure over a thick winter sweater or temporary bandage.
  • For cats, measure when they are calm—not mid-zoomie.
  • If you already own a well-fitting collar, measure the inner length of that collar as a cross-check, then compare to the product chart.
